Sony VAIO VPC-W121AX/P 10.1-Inch Pink Netbook – Up to 7 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) On Sale.

This is the newest model (W211AX) of Sony’s Netbooks and has a extended battery life. While others may complain of the battery- I like the fact that it elevates the netbook up towards you. Depending on the surfing you do- you may have a bit less battery life than advertised. I ordered the pink Vaio and couldn’t be more pleased. It was everything I expected it to be and then some. The Track pad is reasonably sized and much larger than most. The screen clarity is amazing. My only complaint is where the speakers are situated for the volume. I simply resolved this issue on my own and use my ipod head phones when listening to sound. To the lower right of screen you may also adjust zoom level. Your options are 100, 125, and 150. If you do increase the zoom level- You do loose a bit of viewing and must scroll from side to side. The keyboard buttons are a bit elevated and makes it easier for typing. The only other downfall that I could say would be that the netbook only comes with Windows 7 Starter. With this program starter version you are unable to change desktop background. Bummer… I love that I can install my SD card and download my photos too. Perfect for web surfing, downloading pics, typing, emails, etc.

Absolute junk – Dr. R. W. Mehler – Los Angeles, CA
What a piece of trash.

It broke after less than three months and Sony refuses to fix it under warranty.

Flimsy junk. Stay away unless you enjoy burning hundred dollar bills.

Also it is noisy and the tumor battery is awkward and ugly. Even before it broke I was not impressed.

If only the battery were flat… – Victor Bright – Bonny, Nigeria
Just want to say what i dont like about this netbook: I bought this netbook as a gift for my wife even though I had read the negeative reviews particularly on the unpleasant bulging of the battery. I bought it partly because it has an attractive feminine colour. On first usage, i confirmed how uncomfortable this netbook is on the laps since it has such an awkward balance due to the protruding battery. It also wont lie flat on a table surface and could cause disconfort for someone already use to the flat lieing netbooks.

It would have been a much better product if it had a flat battery that would also allow the screen to be opened 180 degrees.

I am reaaly happy that I bought this amazing lap top from this amazing website. Thank you amazon

Good price for a good product – Martin Bages – México City, México.
I was looking for many branches until I decided to buy the Sony Vaio Netbook.

As Advantages I can mention the fashionable design with excellent image (the higher Video resolution of the market for those kind of machines), Long life battery, 250GB Hard Drive (the biggest of the market at this price).
It’s absolutely recommended to upgrade the RAM Memory from 1 to 2GB by buying a 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Memory, and a Memory stick in order to be able to use the ReadyBoost Memory (option anly allowed though Windows 7). Taking this actions you are able to have up to 3GB RAM memory, which allowed you to work with two or three heavy applications at the same time without delays.

Regarding the RAM memory upgrade I must say that it’s not easy to do it by yourself, but after watching at a video in youtube for this specific model, this activity becomes relatively easy.

As disadvantages I have to definitely mention the small keyboard. It’s in some way uncomfortable to type on those small keys.

So, as conclusion, I continuos thinking the Vaio 121 is one of the best netbooks option in the market for the price you can find in Amazon.

Gateway LT2044u 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – Over 8 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) On Sale.

I purchased this netbook about a month ago and I can’t put it down. I take it everywhere. The display is crystal clear and the keyboard is just the right size. It does collect finger prints, but as long as you don’t touch the display who cares. I had only one issue so far and the service was great. I can’t say it’s the fastest (2 weeks), but it’s fixed. I had to have the keyboard replaced under warranty. Let’s just say it someone got a hold of it when daddy wasn’t looking. I was able to get it from Amazon for 9 with free shipping…I put in a Western Digital Scorpio 320GB 7200RPM drive…upgraded the memory to 2GB…and put in a 8GB SD card for ReadyBoost (didn’t see a difference with the ReadyBoost). I was able to clone the hard drive, so I didn’t lose any special software or setup. The best part was I didn’t have to try and reinstall an OS. The processor is ok…the reason why I bought this model is because I can’t stand the touchpads on the newer netbook models and there really isn’t that big of a difference between the N280 and N450 chipset. This netbook is completely loaded. It’s perfect for small applications, surfing the net, and doing email. I just put MS Office 2010 Beta on it without any issues. This is my first Gateway and being a computer specialist I was a little nervous, but not anymore.

You cannot go wrong in buying this. – J. Herman –
I purchased this for 9.99 from Amazon just over a week ago. Turned it on and within 90seconds I am on the internet. I am planning just to get avast because its free but Norton that is on it is fine, no viruses or problems so far. The webcam is a great addition, have not had the chance to use the bluetooth, however the card reader is excellent. I went out of town with my camera and was able to take the pictures from my camera and upload them to my computer.

I have charged my netbook twice or three times in a week. It is great that you can easily turn down the backlight (use it on low because on high it is too bright and drains the battery quickly). And if I am not using the internet I simply turn off the wireless and the battery life shoots up. I am happy with the Hibernate feature, it takes less than a minute to get powered up, may be around 30 seconds. The windows 7 snap feature – probably the only thing I saw from the commercial is amazing. Having 2 windows (even though very small on the screen) is great when comparing websites or surfing simultaneously.

Good luck!

THE LITTLE RED BEAST – BAKERBOY81 – SHAFTER CA
THIS NET BOOK IT GOOD BUT NOT GREAT… IF YOU NEED A NET BOOK FOR SURFING THE WEB,EMAILS,AND SKYPING HAVE AT IT. THE KEYBOARD ON THIS NET BOOK IS VERY SMALL.I LIKE THE KEYBOARD ON THE DELL MINI. THE PALM REST IS JUST A LITTLE SHORT. THE LITTLE WEB CAM IS THE BEST PART OF THIS LITTLE BEAST. ITS CLEAR, GREAT QUALITY. DON’T GET ME WRONG THIS IS A GOOD NET BOOK BUT IF YOU HAVE LARGE MAN HANDS,ITS NOT THE ONE FOR YOU. THE WEB SURFING IS QUICK AND THE BLUETOOTH IS GREAT. PAIR IT UP WITH YOUR PHONE AND TRANSFER FILES MUSIC AND MORE.THE SCREEN IS NICE AND BRIGHT BUT IT WILL EAT UP YOUR BATTERY LIFE IF YOU HAVE IT TOO BRIGHT. IT GETS LOTS OF FINGER PRINTS BUT THAT ON BIG DEAL. OH YEAH ALSO IF YOU WANNA CHANGE YOUR DESKTOP,TO BAD YOU CAN’T WINDOWS 7 STARTER WON’T LET YOU. THAT WAS A BIG DEAL FOR ME. YOU WILL GET ABOUT 6-7 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE EVEN IT THEY TELL YOU EIGHT. I HAVE IT ON THE LOWEST BATTERY SETTING AND STILL DON’T GET 8 HOURS. ALL IN ALL IT A GOOD NET

Excelente Producto – Johan M. Ramirez – Roanoke, VA

Amazing little red jewel – PETNET – seattle, WA USA
I am so impressed with my lttle ‘red pet’; I originally had the Gateway LT 2030u, which was a good little netbook, but I was really interested in the newer processor because it faster and that this newer netbook had bluetooth. It is fast, has a longer life battery and very easy to use. It is lightweight and I can’t wait to use it on my next flight. The keyboard is convenient and comfortabe and the screen bright and sharp. I use it in the evenings while I watch TV, to catch up on my emails and shop online. I am sure that I will use it also for other applications and find the ease of use and quality amazing!

HP Mini 5101 FM955UT 10.1-Inch Black Netbook – Up to 4.5 Hours of Battery Life On Sale.

I am an avid Amazon shopper and will rarely go elsewhere for major purchases but I had no choice because when this model came out, Amazon simply did not have it. I’m very impressed with this Netbook from HP even though like all Netbooks it can be a bit of a headache playing back video files, but mainly it’s the players such as the iTunes and QTime Player that is the headache and these players choke on their own file formats due to DRM and loads of fat in their file formats. I loaded the DivX player and this had resolved the choppy playback on MPEG files for even my older Netbook. Also, VLC media player is an option too, Windows Media player requires a MPEG2 decoder but still plays AVI, WMV files quite nicely. HULU plays well, and I believe Vimeo is the best player for online content. Netflix plays well with even the slowest of Netbooks. I am hoping for a Broadcom HD Graphics Accelerator option just like in the other HP’s latest offerings of Netbooks. The big pluses have to be the much better keyboard design and the mousepad is exactly how all HP Netbooks be configured. The 5101 is not perfect but it is the best looking Netbook, 7200 RPM drive is standard with more choices of GB capacity, 2 MP camera which makes it one of the best in terms of video quality, and the option to upgrade to 2GB which is a nice deal. I love the durakeys, though the case can be a fingerprint magnet and is rugged as heck you’d still want to put this baby in a protective covering. I am so happy HP continued with ruggedized shells, as it is much better than plastic and it looks very nice; very professional. 3 USB ports are perfect and puts it on par with with laptops in terms of USB ports. I’m not missing the Express Slot because there simply is not enough hardware out there to make this slot usable for most people. The Smart Media slot is sufficient. The layout is nice, and there seems to be more layout space and open space for future improvements. Yes, there are two versions of this machine that have Energy Star ratings at budget level (one with the 4 cell and one with the 6 cell battery); that is the only difference or you can configure your system at HP small and medium business site and could run up to 0.00 plus for a top notch machine. I chose the 6 cell battery and I’m pretty happy with it, and in the future will upgrade to a HD version once a Graphics Accelerator that helps the Intel embedded GMA with processing HD video files. Buy the HP 5101 and you will get addicted to it.

the best mini laptop ever made – R. Sardinha – USA
I put it under examination, it works great with outlook, explorer, skype and some office document of around 60 Mb at same time, the processor runs between 40-60% of capacity and 50% of physical memory. I am running VPN of my company or remote connection combine with other two programs and it run ok, so don’t be afraid to get one, maybe not for daily use under heavy tasks but great for bussines traveling, it will achieve all your necessities.

The only thing that I don’t like is that it is not built in mobile broadband as ad. in HP 5101 FM955UT video, so don’t buy it thinking it is inside. I will wait for this interesting option in order to get a new one with the SIM slot ready to use.

Top Notch Netbook – Benjamin A. Cenis – Atl GA USA
I did much research before I decided to purchase the HP 5101, after all, spending 0 on a netbook that you cannot see before you buy seemed a little risky. I’ve had it for about a week now and am glad to say that it is living up to expectation.

The specs speak for themselves, pretty much standard netbook fare, but the details of this machine set it apart. It looks great, is sturdy and feels great too. The keyboard is larger and easier to use than my last notebook – a larger device than the 5101. The keys are also very quiet and have a nice feel and rebound. One very nice addition is the soft feel to the area below the keyboard that warps around to the back of the unit. It results in a soft but durable feel, making typing that much nicer. The 5101 just feels like a well built netbook. The mouse pad is a nice design too, considering the good placement of the mouse buttons and the addition of a scroll on the right side.

The first thing I did to the 5101 was upgrade to 2g of RAM. This is a very simple process and definitely speeds it up. I also opted for the hi-cap battery, although I have not had enough time to test its actual run time. One nice feature about the battery that seems to be frequently overlooked is the built in LED indicator. Flip the netbook over and press the button to see how much battery charge is remaining. No need to power up to check the battery gauge. Nice!

Processing wise, it’s not a speed demon. This is a netbook, it’s not meant to handle large applications but for regular Internet use, email and common programs (Word, Excel, etc) it works great. The screen is one of the largest currently available but does take a little getting used to. Learning how to hide tool bars and web address bars will help maximize your on-screen experience.

The design is smart, clean and stylish. The processing is on the high end for netbooks, the unit is light, durable and comfortable. You can pick up a plastic netbook for cheaper and get it confused with your kids netbook, or you can pay a little extra for the 5101 and have a netbook that should out last and out perform.

Simply the Best! – Andrew L. Robinson – Bellingham, WA
Simply the best netbook that I have ever used and I have used a few ranging from Asus to Dell to an early model HP 1000. I purchased directly from HP before the 5101 was available from other retailers and bought the 6-cell version. This appears to be the 4-cell version. Working just fine with Windows 7 and I found all the drivers I needed.

Best feature: The matte screen, the keyboard and the 7200 RPM drive.

Minor gripes: I would pay more for a backlit keyboard. The power button and quick-launch LEDs are very bright in a dark room and I wish I could turn them off with a BIOS setting. I might actually tape over them. The volume and screen brightness controls seem to be tightly coupled with a Windows driver and I can’t adjust the screen or sound until I am logged into Windows. The DC portion of the AC/DC adaptor is large and long sticking out almost 2 inches. A cord with a plug at 90 degrees would be really nice.

Overall: I would buy this again in a second.

Sylvania GNET31201X6S 10-Inch Magni Elite Slate G-Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home) Black On Sale.

This is my favorite small-factor computer to date. I have used several netbooks, and am thrilled with my purchase of the Sylvania Magni G Elite!

The Pros:
*Keyboard is small, but provides good tactile feedback, and has the arrow keys and shift keys in the right places
*Upgradable memory to 2GB (an absolute necessity, thankfully the memory is cheap)
*Good quality webcam
*Bright non-glossy screen that doesn’t show smudges

The Cons:
*Sentelic touchpads (included in most models) are terrible – there were no drivers for side scroll before, so I replace it with a synaptics touchpad. (Online instructions can be found – fairly straight forward, but not for the faint of heart). Oh, and it probably voids any warranty
*Function key is in the wrong place – so many other places would have worked, not sure why they got this wrong
*Expected better battery life – fortunately the power adapter is pretty light-weight

I knew purchasing this, that I merely wanted it to take with me to meetings rather than a bulkier full-sized laptop. I use online apps (Google docs, Outlook Web Access, etc) with it exclusively – how netbooks were intended to be used. And expected to upgrade the touchpad and memory at the time of purchase, so those were not big surprises. Couldn’t be happier with this choice!

Great Value Netbook! – Timothy E. Zahn – Rockford, IL USA
As other reviews here have stated, this is a re-branded MSI Wind U100 netbook. I have opened the netbook and even compared the internals to posted picture of the internals of the MSI Wind U100.

I also bought the additional 1GB of RAM and installed it myself.

This was a Mothers Day present for my wife and it has been just what she was looking for. She uses it for Internet, email, letters, and online cookbooks mostly.

It has worked great with the exception of a problem with the touchpad. After installing some Microsoft Updates the touchpad stopped working correctly. After trying upgrading and downgrading Synaptics drivers and several other things, I found that this netbook has a Sentelic touchpad and not a Synaptics touchpad. So I un-installed the Synaptics software and rebooted, when Windows XP loaded again, it installed a generic Microsoft driver for the touchpad. I rebooted the netbook again and it has worked fine ever since.

I would rate this netbook 5 stars, if it hadn’t been for the hours I spent trying to figure out the touchpad problem.

Can’t believe more people don’t know about this one! – jedeye5 – New York, NY
First of all, I spent a significant amount of time researching just about every manufacturer and type of netbook available prior to this purchase.

The Sylvania is simply the best deal out there when you make any comparison, and it works beautifully. It feels solid and well built. Probably because it is the exact machine as the MSI Wind U100, only 100 dollars less. I bought this from Amazon for 249.99.

Here’s the breakdown:
10 inch screen
1GB memory expandable to 2G
160GB HD
Windows XP
3 USB ports
multicard reader

6 cell battery (and yes, I get over 6 hours with heavy internet surfing and video)

Lastly, there is a 3 year warranty – unheard of among any manufacturer!!!!

Nothing out there compares, even with any Black Friday specials.

BAD bad bad bad. don’t waste your money – Thomas Crider –
Bought this laptop about 3 months ago. out of the package the screen had a slight dark fade in one spot as if someone had pressed the back of it with their finger, (the casing is flimsy on top of the screen anyway, so be careful). figured it was minor and didnt need immediate attention. Upgraded the OS to windows vista, it didnt recognise the webcam and had no driver support for it. Used it for work on the go, last week the screen went out completely. Have looked for parts all over and there are none unless you send it directly to sylvania under warranty, which I can not do because I need it in time for my job. Spend your money on a better brand.

HP Mini 210-1080NR 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook – 9.75 Hours of Battery Life On Sale.

I got this for Mother’s Day and I must say it is all I expected it to be. I have a computer whiz in the family who added lots of software and a personal screensaver even with the Windows 7 Starter. I have plenty of space for all my music, movies and pictures. I take it almost everywhere. Access the internet with my iPhone connection. The touch pad takes a little getting used to (the whole touchpad moves the mouse), but after I got the hang of it and tweeked it a bit, it is great. The screen is bright, the computer is plenty zippy and the battery life is good, although not as long as some other netbooks with 6 cell batteries. Now about the battery. It is large no doubt, but I’ve not found it to be a problem. In fact, it helps give me something to grip when I am carrying it around the house, and it has a good typing angle. If they ever come out with a smaller one, I might get that one and use the larger on for traveling, but it’s no big deal for me. I haven’t upgraded the memory as of yet. I am thinking about Windows 7 premium in the future as well, but for now I am happy with this model. I did buy a wireless mouse and a bluetooth dongle so I will have options, for very little additional cost. The color red is nice, matte finish and not too bright. I think you would enjoy this neat little netbook.

Very Pleased with Amazon service – P. Eckstein – Colorado Springs, Colorado USA
I originally ordered a Samsung netbook. I had mega problems with its backup system. After 5 contacts with their (Samsung)customer service, I had enough. Because the software was not working properly pretty much right out of the box, Amazon took the return and paid for shipping both ways. No problem.

After more investigation, I ordered the hp 210. I have not had any problems with it. Also, I find the keyboard far superior without the frequent dropped keys.

I am very happy with the hp, and I am very happyhow Amazon treated me.

Pretty good – Gregory A. Schindler – E. Patchogue, NY United States
I purchased the HP mini because I am on the go all of the time, so I needed something light and portable.
Overall this Mini performs pretty well, I had to upgrade the memory because the 1g was insufficient.
I like the extended battery life but do not really like how far the battery pack sticks out.
The netbook came loaded with a bunch of unnecessary junk software that I had to remove to improve the performance.
I tried to run HP QuickSync but when I loaded it on my other computer it told me that I have already used my allocated number and needed to purchase more licenses. I still haven’t resolved this with HP.
Overall the Mini works well, although I am not sure whether the small computer is worth the sacrifice for portability.

Great Little Notebook – John Heard – La Harpe, KS United States
Very happy with the little mini! After playing around with it for a week or two, I plugged it into a larger monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse and now it doubles as an extra desktop. I had only planned on using the Mini for trips and what not, but I’ve been quite impressed with it’s speed and disk space for use as an extra desktop.

I would like to see an option for more ram – 2gig would have been nice and that will probably be an upgrade I’ll make in the future.

Lenovo S10-2 10.1-Inch Pink Netbook – Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) On Sale.

With the S10-2 Lenovo played a game of give and take.

On the outside, the netbook looks and feels cheap. Everything is plastic — even the metal looking bits. This makes for a very light netbook, and one that can survive a drop without much damage [speaking from experience]. Even the decorative colors look like a half-hearted attempt at dressing this device up. Finally, the battery has a hump in it that allows device to sit at an angle. This is a great feature because it allows the netbook too cool efficiently, but at the same time makes S10-2 a bit thick. If aesthetics are important to your computing devices this might not be the netbook for you.

The inside bits show where Lenovo paid attention. The keyboard, although not full size, is large enough type comfortably on, and the keys have excellent tactile feedback. The screen is glossy (but not overwhelmingly), responsive, and bright. My eyes say image quality on the screen isn’t as good as my Macbook Pro or Macbook, but on par with my Dell E6500. The camera is a 1.2 megapixel device with great image quality. The Intel GMA950 Graphics is plenty of GPU to do what this netbook is designed to do; surf the web, read e-mail, and video conferencing. Netbooks and laptops often exhibit signal interference from their own componentry when you listen to audio with good quality headphones/earbuds — not so with Lenovo S10-2. The audio components are excellent, even the tiny speakers perform well; in fact I would say the audio is better quality than all three of my afore mentioned laptops. Wired and wireless networking is just as fast and stable as all my other mobile networking devices. Finally, the N270 processor can perform all these tasks without the netbook feeling sluggish (if you use the correct OS), thanks to it’s dual core nature.

However, where the S10-2 falls flat is the choice in Operating Systems. I am a fan of Windows 7; it’s a solid operating system, and I enjoy using it on my Dell. However the “Starter” edition of Windows 7 is simply something Microsoft created to so you would pay for upgrade. It is too limited (unless your an advanced user, you won’t even be able to change your desktop background) it wants far more processor, more GPU, and more memory than this netbook can provide. A memory upgrade to 2GB will keep you from wanting to pull your hair out, but the real solution here is to change your OS to something designed to run small devices [not a task for non-technical users].

Pleased with the netbook but most of all the service was good – Andrew W. Cameron – Pensacola, Florida
The computer was bought for my wife as she loves to play cards and this computer does the job. But more important then it works is that the service from Amazon was very good. The computer arrived in two days, we are both pleased.

Amazing! – Ipek Ozay –
Before I start using Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 I would ever never expect this quality. It’s more than amazing.. First of all forget about recharging your computer.Battery life is more than 6 hours. When it’s not in use I put on hibernate, then battery lasts all day long. Very light, I carry everywhere with me in my small purse. Monitor a little bit small, but if you don’t have vision problem it’s not a big deal at all. About handling if you buy from Amazon you must expect a long waiting time. I had to buy from Amazon to be able to use Amazon card, I have waited about 3 weeks to get it, right after this I bought another regular laptop; even though I paid extra 2 day delivery fee $ 19.80, still I got it in 1 week. For the product it’s strongly recommended..

LAPTOP – Jack M. Wheeler – LESAGE, wv, US
THIS IS A GREAT PRODUCT WITH LOTS OF FUNCTION, FAST, AND LOOKS NICE ALSO. GOOD PURCHASE

Great little Netbook – Kevin Hughes – Ventura CA
Second one of these we got. Both get lots of use, are simple and reliable. Battery life is good, shipping was fast, and price was reasonable. All purchases should be like this.

Samsung N140-14R 10.1-Inch Burgundy Netbook – Up to 7.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) On Sale.

I think I am the first to review this. Let me state I own the N120 and it is a great computer, we have had that one almost 5 months.

I just got the N140 yesterday. I will make good then bad things about the n140 – but all and all I love the matte screen, I wish they had a keyboard/screen option of WHITE rather than black, my wife’s is all white and so easy to see everything in any room light.

GOOD and bad:

Same rugged Samsung body, you feel safe holding this 2.8 pound baby around.

They added a zippered case, a little thicker and nice printed SAMSUNG on the top so it doesn’t get layed upsaide down and you always know where the front is.

Most all the ports (USB, VGA, POWER) are all on the oposite side of the N120 – I know the N140 was based on the N10 series, but the saddest feature which the sure could have stolen from the N120 is the WONDERFUL embedded Speakers surrounding the screen. It boomed out at you.

They moved the multireader card slot to the center which is a blessing, on the n120 it is to the right side and your palm just above the wrist catches it alot when typing.

I’m averaging (just in the last 2 days) over 8 hours of battery life – wow. I did thought add the SECOND GIG OF RAM (took it from the n120) and it speeds this Vista based OS well. I gig is really pushing what is required from SEVEN and a few small programs will use up all your RAM – either computer go for 2GIGS, but the N140 needs the upgrade and the N120 it is more a luxury item.

The Burgandy (so I assume most dark color exteriors) almost appear black in muted room light, only uder BRIGHT lighting can you see the true color you paid for.

I wanted to add about the Matte finish. It is a joy, much wider viewing angle from the glossy screen (glossy washes out from reflection of light and is hard to see from the sides, surely the viewing angle of the glossy is realist two close people from 6 to 8 foot away (which is far for a 10 inch screen).

The Matte passed all my viewing tests – look move your head from the perfect viewing angle and see where the picture loses quality, honestly from typing distance, I saw no side to side loss and very little from crouching to standing up.

I think that you have a 5 bar system in Win7, I have yet to have it show my signal strength. It is just 5 empty silos waiting to be filled – I show no bar activity at all. I know I’m connected and I think that I should be able to see my strength rather than an empty bar signal meter – hmmmm, need to play with that one.

Imporant!!!! If you watch the [...] Videos of the N140, look at the ENTER and the RIGHT SHIFTKEY – you will see TWO DIFFERENT TYPE, I assume in Europe or somewhere the combining of these two keys is aacceptable – BUT “Here in the USA” we need a FULL SIZED RIGHT SHIFT KEY, nothing less. The combokey has what is called a HALF KEY, a key the width of letters and numbers. A full key is ENTER/both SHIFTS and where this becomes a problem is:

When you type, your muscle memory knows where to put the fingers, often getting slowed down cause the people doubted what their fingers wanted to do…. If you type like so many of us do massively long letters, etc. Your finger will hit the UP ARROW intead of the RIGHT SHIFT nearly every time and is hard to break if you use more than on keyboard, whether at work or home.

Instead of hitting the Shift you hit that up arrow and your cursor leaves position and you have to move it back and if you miss it, you might be typing new stuff unthinkingly into th center of a non-related paragraph.

So FULL SIZED SHIFT KEYS may be one of the major things to keep in mind. As far as I can tell, all us purchased N140s have 2 full shifts, just check pictures if ordering online to be safe.

Please give feedback and stars if this has been helpful – please check out my insainely long review of the N120 when it cam months ago.

I think the speakers not being in the screen sides bugs me the most, those who ha that option LOVED it, in most room setups you didn’t need external speakers or headphones with the N120, the N140 is NOT as loud, I only see a pair of stereo speakers in the front – in the N120, there was a subwhoofer there (which gave no base of course) but it did add to the loudness with the other two speakers blasting from practically out of the movie you’re watching.

Speaking of which, I just swapped the memory up to 2GIG in the N140, so I haven’t retried [...] and more importantly to me Fancast for our TV shows we watch every wee, but I haven’t tried yet. I love Fancast because we can find a night I’m not working and both of us catch up with 3 or 4 one hour shows we know will be online and ready to watch, practically commercial free. That makes for a huggy night on the couch :)

My point, the N140 had a lot of problems with the high-def videos, where the N120 dosen’t. I’m hoping to FIX the problem with the newly upgrade RAM, I’ll add an updated post in a few days.

I can’t rate it a 4.5 stars, which I would. Having Bluetooth available, the widest and most comfortable keyboards nd all Samsung made parts make it a steal at the 2, that includes S&H and it’s more cause of the Burgandy paint. The only other color available was this emerald blue, but it looked like a wallpaper image of a swimming pool. I chose the Burgandy. That is fine, I just want to make sure I grab mine and not my wifes, that’s all.

I guess the last differences noticed externally:

The power switch is now a slide switch to the righhand under the front of the touch pad – you simply slide the switch all the way right for about 1 second and it turns on – boot up about 45 seconds (30 on the N120) You can only really hit it by accident if you pick up the computer and place you fingers over the switch – but the switch is strongly made, has good resistance to accidental switching and I think I like it better than the N120 which was near the lid hinge, on the right rear, you could easily push the power switch as yhou enter it into the case.

As you can tell, I’m into the ergonomics and structure of the machine, lots of people can detail the speed. Again, I haven’t done anything with the extra GIG of RAM yet although it is installed – I will need a followup, but it displeases me that SAMSUNG couldn’t have made the N140 a “TWO GIG” factory shipped Netbook, people would gladly pay a reasonable cost difference if you get that kind of performance increase.

UPDATE IMPORTANT FINDINGS

After a few days, I re-review the N140 and drop the rating to a FOUR STAR only for the following reasons.

First, I have two gigs in this (borrowed the 2 gig chip which is compatable from my wife’s N120 – but even with 2 GIGs the N140 still isn’t as fast as the N120 using XP.

I thought the whole idea of Win7 was to give faster, slimmer and more XP friendly user features. The N140 comes with Win7 Starter (a bad thing for them to do, it should have at least home installed, even if I need to pay licensing difference) but the starter is OK if you choose to use STUFF that isn’t typical Word, Excel and Others – I prefer Open Source like Open Office and [...] which work fine in both netbooks.

So, Win7 Starter is NOT as fast with the 280 chip using 2 GIG RAM, as the N120 is with 270 chip and 1 GIG RAM. I was hoping at least a tie, but I prefer the XP speed and reliability over the WIN7 – which is really limited with the features you expected to get with Win7. Be careful ordering and look for options with Win7 Home (it may not be an option, Windows has tight restrictions on the Netbook Market, including chipset options, etc.
Hind site, should I have bought a second N120 – the thought is a valid one, although I hope that upgrading Win 7 (gonna cost or so) will make it more functional to me as a medium skilled user. That is what I have been waiting for after all.

Samsung STILL DELIVERS A GREAT PRODUCT – this MATTE SCREEN is AWESOME, a definite 9 out of 10 review from me. The keyboard is a pleasure to use as far as ANY NETBOOK GOES. It just has a Operating System that isn’t ideally made for a 1.66 GHZ Processor, that is what I think the issue is.

So you need to be a little more patient when speed is your issue, the XP’ed N120 kicks the tail of the N140 with Win7 Starter. Because it is a bad choice to give a computer owner, literally forcing many into paying for the upgrade, rather than just opting it as a luxury item – I give the new review a 4 out of 5 stars, I sadly take back what would have been a 4.6 out of 5 if they allowed it until I dealt with slow processing of programs.

Otherwise, still a GREAT GREAT MACHINE – it is kinda seeing a nearly perfect movie, except one stupid out of place scene tosses the a big monkey wrench in the plot – as least as you see it. Others may not catch the the plot screw up and to them it is a perfect movie, I get picky when testing out new items like these awesome Netbooks – which are extremely nice to have around as a family second or third computer, available to how ever grabs it.

In todays world, having this much technology in such a portable package, if you can afford it, the 0 these cost is likely the smartest thing a growing family or someone on the go could really make great use of – enriching their life, awesome stocking stuffer for the whole family.

1200 for a new netbook? 320 for used? – Raghupathy Srinivasan –
What are you guys smoking? Has amazon gone crazy? Or is it just the resellers?

Just to keep things in perspective – a new netbook should retail for around 300 USD. A used netbook for around 200 USD. 1200 USD would buy me -
1. a top of the line 13″ laptop
2. a Macbook
3. 2 iPads with 3G

Needs wi fi replaced – George Allison – Texas
I purchased the Samsung Netbook and it worked fine except for the wi-fi. It dropped out Alot. It didn’t drop the router it dropped the DNS or the internet info and I was constantly having to do a repair on the wi-fi to get back on the internet. I returned it to Amazon and they returned my purchase price in less than a week. I will buy from them again as this was the fastest I ever had money returned from any retailer.

great little netbook – no bluetooth – T. Bair – Grand Rapids, MI
Had just missed the big box 0 black friday deal by a few hours. Really wanted one so orderd this for more from Amazon on cyber monday evening. Arrived 3 days later via UPS free ground shipping. After playing with this a few days now, wife and I really appreciate the larger keys and non-glare screen. (great at breakfast table near a window) Got the touch pad dialed in to suit (still get the occasional unexpected movement). Anyway a couple of problems here. You can’t use this netbook right away because when you first turn it on it still has to finish installing the OS. Then it wants to partition the 250gb drive. (I moved the slider to set mine to 40gb for the OS as drive C:/ and the rest as drive D:/) Then a bunch of updates and assorted unknown nonsense. Finally after about an hour you can use it. But it’ll seem terribly slow until you do some further updating of various drivers, etc. Mine kept dropping connection to my wireless N router. Was finally able to keep it connected long enough to update internal wireless adapter receiver, good solid connection after that. A bit bland, Win7 Starter does not allow you to change your wallpaper nor is there any aero transparent glass, no media center or other such goodies. Quickly did the “anytime” on-line upgrade thing to Win7 home premium. Big difference. Nice and pretty and more enjoyable now, matching the slick chrome trim of the unit. Also dumped mcafee in favor of microsoft security essentials. Re-skinned with the burlwood design [...]. This little netbook with the N280 processor does work well with Win 7 whereas my Acer Aspire One (N270 & 2gb) was a bit sluggish even with a clean install. Highly recommend this Samsung netbook. Just keep in mind: the manual is in software only, under Start>All Programs>Samsung>user guide. There doesn’t appear to be any blue tooth functionality with this unit that I can find. Also for best performance with streaming videos (such as instant play netflix movies) press Fn&F8 at the same time to change power settings. Also be sure to install the 2gb memory upgrade, periodicaly go to Samsung’s web site and get any desired updates including bios. Keep it defragged and virus free and have fun!

Went on Staples website and ordered the upgrade for window 7, even got a 30 Dollar coupon so only paid 49.99 Dollars. My daughter just loves it and so do I. Window 7 is fast. Me who only deals with a desktop computer, had a blast experiencing all the new little things of a netbook. Still will do all my gaming on my Desktop, but for the rest I will use this one. I’m very happy with my decision and I would recommend this one to anybody who is looking for a netbook. And the price was right also.

While it’s not perfect, the Aspire One 532H-2326 is a sweet little computer. Easy to transport, quick to start up and easy to use once you get used to the smaller keyboard. And who can say no to 8+ hours of battery life.

If you are looking for a light weight netbook that is high on battery power and breeze to use this one will fit the bill.

P.S. Get the extra RAM you will be happy you did.

This is an overall decent little netbook its slow but I’m hoping the 2 GM memory will help. One thing to beware of is Acer is downright selling these units through false advertizing saying right on the box that they are 802.11 bgn capable. This is my second Acer and neither will work on the n range. I have a netgear n network router and my Dell mini 10 works fine over the n range. Acer downright has misrepresented the capabilities of thier netbooks. I won’t purchase another one.

Great netbook if you get the right stuff – S. Pauker – Boston, MA
Once I got it working, it seems great; however, it does need the 2GB memory.
I started out with -2588 (160GB disk) and could not get it to recognize a 2GB DDR2 PC5300 chip from Kingston or PNY. I actually bought that machine from Staples, and their tech said that Acer changed the specs and it no longer takes more than 1GB.

However, reading the comments on Amazon I will return the device to Staples and I already bought the -2326 with the Crucial memory listed on Amazon. It works like a champ!! Recognized the 2GB chip immediately. Didn’t need to go into setup (F2), and it seems far zippier than the 1GB machine.

However, before I tried it, I looked at the Crucial website which suggested in red to be sure that machine had latest BIOS upgrade. I asked Acer Support about this and got the following reply: “Please be informed that the memory in your system is expandable only up to 1 GB.” So Acer seems to be saying 1GB only, but with the Crucial 2GB memory it seems to work well. Of note, the 2GB Crucial chip as bundled by Amazon says DDR2 but when I run CUPZ-CPUID, it says it’s a DDR3 chip.

In any case, so far so good, and happy with the 2GB configuration. I wonder if the system is pushing the limits and if ACER has pulled back because some 2GB chips don’t work.

But for now, I’m smiling.

Steve
